CSS styled lists

Today I have published a new release of phpwcms. There are a lot of fixes implemented. But also 2 new replacement tags where added. These tags helps to create list based CSS styled navigation menus. One represents the top site structure level, the other one returns a list with the currect level. CSS is a very powerful technique. One cool new thing is to use CSS styled HTML lists. This produces very smart rollover menus (based on the used CSS settings) without any JavaScript onMouseOver code. The need of a modern webbrowser is the only limitation.

International character support

Done! Now phpwcms should have no more problems when international characters are used — I hope so. I replaced every htmlspecialchars() function with a new function that converts special chars in a safe way. Welcome Turkish users (ŞşİıÖöÇçĞğÜü) and Polish people (Pełna nazwa kraju: Rzeczpospolita Polska) and anybody else who had problems with this.

Languages with multibyte chars like Chinese aren't very good supported by phpwcms. Now I have patched many database fields for better handling of multibyte chars. For instance article titles are now stored as TEXT (max. 65535 chars) - not longer as VARCHAR (max. 255 chars): for Chinese language this has meant only a maximum of 31 chars per title).

Open Source is a hype and since the success of LINUX it is widely accepted. Because of having no license fees and the possibility of look at the source code a large group of professional, public and private users use open source software for their special needs. In my opinion open source is a social movement: give and take. Look at SourceForge.net, the world's largest Open Source software development website. This shows you what I mean. You can find very professional software for nearly every scope of application.

At the moment not really finished is phpwcms's template management. But it's flexible, stable and usable. It can handle unlimited templates – every site structure level can equipped with its own template. One template can be predefined as the default template. The default template is used whenever a site structure level has no assigned template. Every template value is stored in the database. This is faster than loading from template files.

page layout made easy

When I thought about phpwcms's functionalities this part of the cms was very important to me. "How can I setup my page layout?" must be the most common question users have when they start creating a website. Before implementing this I have seen many cms applications. But often the template creation is very difficult and hard to understand. That's why I have implemented a page layout assistent based on the most used static page layout: header, 3-column (1|2|3), footer and space row or column between the main blocks.

After you have arranged page layout and templates of your originating website it's time to think about the structure of your website. This is a cool section in phpwcms and can be find in the admin section. Starting this for the first time you will wondering yourself — there is only one entry "index".

phpwcms Replacement Tags

phpwcms is a flexible tool for storing and editing different types of content. It comes with many predefined content type editors. But often it is simply to much and you might wish to have a basic snippet of code that represents a special function or returns additional or extended content parts. Replacement tags are implemented for this reason in the content parser. The following text will describe every available phpwcms replacement tag. You can use replacement tags anywherwe: in headlines, subheadlines, summary, templates and so on.

phpwcms file management

File management section of phpwcms is the oldest developed part of phpwcms. This was the main reason for developing phpwcms. The intension was to create a file archive for a small community for a customer of mine. It's online until today and handles more than 5000 files. All file actions should be available to registered users only. That's why you can find the partially confusing setting "active" and "public". But now you have one of the most powerful file management solutions you can find inside a content management system.

Set another website index page

When you install phpwcms there is an index.html page in phpwcms root. This is only a simple phpwcms info page that links to the login.php. If you want to use a simple index.html or default.html this is no problem. Webserver configuration can handle different index pages, but will load them in different order. Often it is configured like this: 1) index.htm/html, 2) index.php and so on.
